Europe changes dramatically through the year. Spring brings tulips and blossom, summer brings long sunny days, autumn turns the vineyards gold, and December fills the squares with Christmas markets. The best time to visit Europe depends on what you want to see, your budget and your holidays. This guide goes month by month, with tips for Indian travellers.
The short answer
Late April to June and September are the best months for most travellers: pleasant 15–25°C weather, long days and gardens in bloom, without the peak crowds of July and August. May and June are also when Indian school holidays begin, which is why our summer group departures fill early. For snow and festive markets, choose December.
Europe month by month
| Month | Weather (Paris / Switzerland) | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| January – February | Cold, 0–8°C; snow in the Alps | Quiet cities, winter sports, low prices |
| March | 5–13°C | Keukenhof opens in the second half of the month |
| April | 8–16°C | Tulips in the Netherlands, blossom in Paris, Easter crowds |
| May | 11–20°C | Keukenhof until mid-May, green Alps, Indian summer holidays begin |
| June | 14–24°C | Longest days, Rhine Falls at full flow, busy with families |
| July – August | 16–27°C, hot in Italy and Spain | Peak season, highest prices, Scandinavia at its best |
| September | 12–22°C | Fewer crowds, warm seas, grape harvest |
| October | 8–16°C | Autumn colours, lower prices, shorter days |
| November | 4–10°C | Quiet and cheap, Christmas markets open late in the month |
| December | 2–8°C; snow in the Alps | Christmas markets, New Year celebrations |
Europe in April and May
Europe in April is spring at its freshest. The Keukenhof gardens near Amsterdam are in full bloom with millions of tulips, Paris's chestnut trees flower and Switzerland's lowlands turn green, although mountain weather can still be wintry. A Europe trip in May adds warmer days and is one of the best times overall. Several of our tours visit Keukenhof on departures until mid-May; read our Keukenhof guide.
Summer in Europe: June, July and August
Summer in Europe means 16-hour days, outdoor cafés and every attraction open late. It is the best time for Scandinavia and the Norwegian fjords, and for Switzerland's lakes and high passes. July and August are hot in Italy, Spain and Portugal, often above 32°C, and very busy at the big sights, so start early, carry water and wear a hat. A Europe trip in June is a good compromise, before the European school holidays.
Europe in September and October
Europe in September is a favourite with experienced travellers: the weather is still warm, the summer crowds have gone home and prices begin to fall. October brings autumn colours in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with shorter days and cooler evenings.
Europe in winter and December
From November to February the cities are quiet and cheaper, except for the Christmas week. December brings Christmas markets, lights and snow in the Alps. Read our guide to Christmas in Europe.

Indian school holidays and group departures
Most Indian schools close from mid-May to June, and again for Diwali and the Christmas week. These are the most popular times for family group tours from India, so departures fill early and flights cost more. If your dates are flexible, travel in late April, early May or September for better prices and smaller groups.
