Switzerland looks beautiful in every season, but the experience changes completely from month to month. In summer the lakes are turquoise, the meadows are green and the mountain railways run late into the evening; in winter the villages are buried in snow and the Christmas lights come on. This guide explains the best time to visit Switzerland for Indian travellers, with weather, crowds and prices for each season.

The short answer

For sightseeing, lakes and mountain views, the best time is May to September, with June and September the sweet spots: long days, mild weather and fewer crowds than July and August. For snow, skiing and Christmas markets, visit from December to March. Jungfraujoch and Mt. Titlis have snow all year round, so you can play in the snow even in a summer Switzerland trip.

Switzerland month by month

MonthsWeather in the valleysWhat to expect
January – February−5–5°C, snowSki season, snowy villages, lower city hotel prices
March – April3–15°CLate snow in the mountains, spring in the lowlands; some lifts close for maintenance
May – June12–24°CGreen meadows, waterfalls at their fullest, popular with Indian families
July – August18–28°CWarmest and busiest, long days, higher prices
September – October8–20°CClear views, autumn colours, fewer crowds
November – December−2–8°CQuiet November; Christmas markets and first snow in December

Switzerland in summer

Summer is the classic time for a first trip. Lake Lucerne and Lake Geneva cruises run frequently, the GoldenPass and other scenic trains offer clear views, and the Rhine Falls carry the most water in June and July after the snowmelt. Evenings stay light until about 9.30 pm, so there is time to stroll along the lakeside after dinner. Even in July it is cold at Jungfraujoch (around −5 to 0°C), so carry a warm jacket for the mountain days.

Switzerland in winter

Switzerland in winter is a fairy tale for families who want snow. Interlaken, Grindelwald and Engelberg are covered in white, ski resorts open from mid-December, and the mountain excursions run all season. Days are short, roads to some high passes close, and boat schedules on the lakes are reduced. Pack thermals, waterproof boots and gloves.

Switzerland in December

Switzerland in December combines snow with Christmas: markets in Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and on the lakeside at Montreux, lights along Bahnhofstrasse and festive dinners. It is a popular time for Indian families during the school holidays, so book early. Our Christmas and New Year group tours spend three nights in the Swiss Alps, with Jungfraujoch and Titlis included.

Best time for Jungfraujoch and Titlis

Both are open all year. Clear days are more common in late summer, autumn and January–February; cloud can hide the view on any day, so tour managers watch the forecast and swap the order of mountain days when needed. Read our Jungfraujoch guide for tips on altitude and clothing.

Switzerland in spring (March to May)

Spring arrives first in Geneva, Montreux and Lucerne, with blossom and tulips in the parks, while the mountains still have deep snow. March and April are quiet and good value, but some high cable cars close for maintenance between the ski and summer seasons, and boat timetables are reduced. By late May the waterfalls are full with snowmelt and the meadows begin to flower.

Switzerland in autumn (September to November)

September is often the clearest month for mountain views, with warm days in the valleys. In October the larch forests turn gold around Zermatt and the Engadin, and the cows come down from the high pastures with flower crowns in village festivals. November is the quietest month, with grey days and some closures, but low prices.

Festivals and events

  • Montreux Jazz Festival (July): concerts on the shores of Lake Geneva.
  • Swiss National Day (1 August): bonfires, lanterns and fireworks across the country.
  • Lucerne Festival (August–September): classical music by the lake.
  • Christmas markets (late November–December): Zurich, Basel, Lucerne and Montreux.

What to pack by season

Summer: light clothes, a sweater for evenings, a waterproof jacket and a warm layer for the mountains. Spring and autumn: layers, a warm jacket and comfortable waterproof shoes. Winter: thermals, a down jacket, gloves, a cap and boots with grip. In every season, carry sunglasses and sunscreen for the snow at Jungfraujoch and Titlis.

How many days to spend in Switzerland

Three nights covers Lucerne, Titlis, Jungfraujoch and the Rhine Falls, which is why most of our Europe tours spend three nights in central Switzerland. With a week you can add Lake Geneva, Montreux, Zermatt and Bern, as on our Switzerland-only tour. Whatever the season, plan at least one spare day in the mountains in case of cloud.

When is Switzerland cheapest?

April–May (outside Easter) and late October–November have the lowest hotel prices. July–August and the Christmas week are the most expensive. For a detailed budget, see our Switzerland trip cost from India guide.
