Short answer

Our Andaman land packages from Chennai start at ₹18,125 per adult on double sharing (GST extra) for 4 nights and 5 days, and ₹20,000 for 5 nights and 6 days. Chennai has a short, low-fare flight to Port Blair: IndiGo and Akasa Air fly direct in about 2 hours 13 minutes, with around 22 flights a week. Government passenger ships also sail from Chennai, but they take days each way. Plan roughly ₹16,000 to ₹35,000 per person for the return flight, and 5 or 6 nights for a first visit.

  • Package price: ₹18,125 to ₹28,750 per adult for 4 to 7 nights, before 5% GST. Flights or ship tickets are not included.
  • Flights: direct on IndiGo and Akasa Air, about 2 hours 13 minutes. The cheapest direct one-way fare seen is ₹8,044.
  • Ship: government vessels run from Chennai. Voyage time is quoted as 50 to 70 hours in some guides and 3 to 4 days in others, so allow for the longer figure.
  • Best length: 5 or 6 nights, which cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil Island.
  • Best season: October to May, with November to April the most popular.
  • Nicobar: the Nicobar Islands are not part of these packages. Access is restricted, so confirm with the authorities before planning anything there.

Booking tips

  • Book 21 to 45 days ahead where you can. Last-minute fares can be 40 to 60% higher.
  • Avoid Diwali and school-holiday weeks if your dates are flexible.
  • Check that your fare is the direct flight, as some listed fares are one-stop.

Going by ship from Chennai

Chennai is one of the mainland ports for the government passenger ships to Port Blair, which makes a ship possible for Chennai travellers in a way it is not for most other cities. It is a slow option, so treat it as an adventure rather than a shortcut.

What we could confirm

  • Operator: the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), Andaman and Nicobar Administration.
  • Vessels: DSS announced in March 2026 a tentative summer schedule (April to June 2026) with MV Swaraj Dweep running regular services to Visakhapatnam and Chennai from 25 April 2026, and Nalanda sailing to Chennai and Kolkata in May 2026. The announcement gives no number of sailings or timetable, and all sailings depend on weather and operations.
  • Voyage time: guides disagree. Some say roughly 50 to 70 hours, and one operator guide says 3 to 4 days depending on sea conditions. Allow for the longer figure.
  • Fares: a February 2025 guide gave one-way fares of ₹2,290 to ₹2,630 (bunk), ₹4,400 to ₹6,750 (second class), ₹7,240 to ₹8,490 (first class) and ₹10,240 (deluxe). Another guide gives an overall range of ₹2,500 to ₹10,000 by cabin type.
  • Booking: the DSS announcement says tickets can be booked online on the DSS e-portal or at STARS counters. One guide says reservations open about a week before departure, and another says schedules go live only 7 to 10 days ahead.

Our advice: confirm the current sailing dates, fares and booking window directly with DSS before you build a trip around the ship. Ship sailings are less predictable than flights, and a 3 to 4 day voyage each way adds 6 to 8 days to a short holiday. No leisure cruise liner is confirmed to call at Port Blair.

Between the islands, government ferries cost about ₹90 to ₹160 per crossing, and private ferries (Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean) run about ₹950 to ₹3,100. Our packages include government-operated ferries in the booked base class.

Which trip length to pick

For a first trip from Chennai, pick 5 or 6 nights. A direct flight of about 2 hours 13 minutes means you lose very little time getting there, so the choice comes down to how many islands you want and how slowly you want to see them.

  • 4 nights / 5 days: the shortest plan. Two nights in Port Blair, then one each in Havelock and Neil. Good if leave is tight.
  • 5 nights / 6 days: three nights in Port Blair add a full day for Ross Island and North Bay. A good fit for a first trip.
  • 6 nights / 7 days: two nights in Havelock, which gives the beaches more time. A slower pace than the 5-night plan.
  • 7 nights / 8 days: adds Baratang. Choose it if you want a slower trip or already know you want the extra stop.

If you go by ship, add the voyage days on top of these nights. See places to visit in the Andaman Islands to decide what you want to see.

Best time to travel from Chennai

The Andaman season runs from October to May, and November to April is the most popular stretch. Rain is the main reason. Port Blair averages 48.9 mm in January and 14.2 mm in February (1991 to 2020 averages), against 407.2 mm in May, 484.2 mm in June and 505.2 mm in September. The Island Tourism Festival is held in January.

For your flights, the lowest one-way fares from Chennai run about ₹8,000 to ₹11,000 from October to March and about ₹11,800 in April and May. See our full guide to the best time to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

  • October to November: lowest fares of the season, but check the weather close to your dates, as October still sees rain (300.9 mm).
  • December to February: dry, and the busiest weeks are around Christmas and New Year. Gala dinner supplements apply on 24 and 31 December.
  • March to May: fares rise a little in April and May, and rain builds towards May.
  • June to September: the monsoon. Weather can disrupt flights, ferries, ships and boat trips, and heavy rain is common.

Planning the journey

Our package prices cover the land arrangements only, so you book the flights or ship tickets yourself, or ask us to quote flights separately. The order that avoids problems:

  1. Ask for a quotation on the enquiry page with your preferred dates and say you are travelling from Chennai, and whether you plan to fly or sail.
  2. Confirm the hotel category and the plan, then check the flight options for those dates. If you plan to sail, confirm the sailing date with DSS first.
  3. Book flights that land in Port Blair with time to spare for the first day's plan, and keep a buffer on the way home.
  4. Send us your flight or ship details so the pickup and drop are arranged around them. Our package lists airport pickup and drop, so ask us in the quote what applies if you arrive at the port by ship.

If you pay by deposit, standard bookings can be secured with 10% when travel is 30 or more days away. Otherwise full payment is due.

A sample 5-night plan, flying direct from Chennai

This follows our 5 nights / 6 days island escape: three nights in Port Blair, one in Havelock, one in Neil.

  • Day 1, Port Blair. Your direct flight lands, you are met at the airport and taken to the hotel. If you arrive early enough, the plan is Corbyn's Cove beach, Cellular Jail and the evening Light and Sound Show.
  • Day 2, North Bay and Ross Island. Boat excursions from Port Blair.
  • Day 3, Havelock. Government ferry across, then Kalapathar and Radhanagar beach.
  • Day 4, Neil. Ferry to Neil, with Bharatpur, the Natural Coral Bridge and Laxmanpur.
  • Day 5, back to Port Blair. Ferry back and a free evening.
  • Day 6, departure. Drop at the airport for your flight home.

Check your flight time: how much of Day 1 you get depends on when your flight lands. If it arrives late, the Cellular Jail visit and the evening show may not fit, so tell us your flight times when you enquire and we will say how the first day can be arranged. If you arrive by ship, the first day depends on the ship's arrival time, so we plan it once you confirm it.
