How many days do you need in Malaysia, and how should you spend them? The answer depends on whether you want a quick city break, a family trip with theme parks or a longer holiday with beaches. This guide gives practical, tried-and-tested plans: a Malaysia 4 days itinerary for Kuala Lumpur and Genting, a 5-day plan with an extra day trip, a Malaysia 7 days itinerary with Langkawi or Penang, and short Kuala Lumpur itinerary ideas.

Each plan assumes you fly from India and land in Kuala Lumpur in the morning or early afternoon, which is typical for flights from Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai.

How many days in Malaysia?

  • 3 to 4 days: Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves and Genting Highlands. Perfect for a first trip or a long weekend.
  • 5 to 6 days: add Sunway Lagoon, Putrajaya, Malacca or a night in Genting with SkyWorlds.
  • 7 to 8 days: Kuala Lumpur and Genting plus Langkawi or Penang, connected by a one-hour flight.
  • 10 days or more: Kuala Lumpur, Genting, Penang and Langkawi, or Malaysia with Singapore.

Malaysia 4 days itinerary: Kuala Lumpur and Genting

Day 1, arrive in Kuala Lumpur: airport transfer and check-in. Evening at KLCC Park for the Petronas Towers lights and fountain show, then dinner at Jalan Alor or Bukit Bintang.

Day 2, Kuala Lumpur city tour: King's Palace, the National Monument, Independence Square, the National Mosque and a chocolate shop stop; afternoon at KL Tower or the Petronas Towers observation deck; evening shopping.

Day 3, Batu Caves and Genting Highlands: early start for Batu Caves, then the Awana SkyWay cable car to Genting for cool air, Chin Swee Temple, shopping or rides; return to Kuala Lumpur.

Day 4, departure: breakfast, last-minute shopping and transfer to the airport.

This is exactly the plan of our Kuala Lumpur tour package; the Malaysia family tour package adds KL Tower Sky Deck tickets with private touring.

Malaysia 4 days itinerary for theme-park lovers

Day 1: straight from the airport to Batu Caves and up the Awana SkyWay to Genting; evening in the resort.

Day 2: full day at Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park.

Day 3: down to Kuala Lumpur for a city tour and KL Tower; evening at Bukit Bintang.

Day 4: departure.

This is the route of our Malaysia Adventure package, the best choice for families with children and teens.

Malaysia 5 days itinerary

Follow the 4-day plan and add one more day in Kuala Lumpur, choosing from:

  • Sunway Lagoon for a full day of water slides and rides with children.
  • Putrajaya and the Petronas Towers: a morning in Putrajaya and an afternoon on the Skybridge and observation deck.
  • Malacca for a heritage day, or Kuala Selangor for the fireflies in the evening.
  • Aquaria KLCC, KL Bird Park and shopping for a relaxed day.

A Malaysia itinerary for 5 days can also spend 1 night in Genting and 3 in Kuala Lumpur. See our guide to day trips from Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia 6 days itinerary

Days 1 to 4: Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves and Genting as above.

Days 5 to 6: either a night in Malacca for Jonker Street night market and the river cruise, or a quick flight to Langkawi for 2 nights on the beach, flying home from Langkawi via Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia 7 days itinerary: Kuala Lumpur, Genting and Langkawi

Day 1: arrive in Kuala Lumpur; evening at KLCC.

Day 2: Kuala Lumpur city tour and KL Tower.

Day 3: Batu Caves and Genting Highlands.

Day 4: Putrajaya or Sunway Lagoon, or free for shopping.

Day 5: fly to Langkawi (about 1 hour); afternoon at Pantai Cenang and sunset.

Day 6: island hopping in the morning; SkyCab and Sky Bridge or a mangrove tour in the afternoon.

Day 7: duty-free shopping and fly back to India via Kuala Lumpur.

This is the classic Malaysia honeymoon route, and great for families too. For culture and food instead of beaches, swap Langkawi for Penang. Read our Langkawi guide and Penang guide.

Kuala Lumpur itinerary: 2, 3 or 4 days

Kuala Lumpur 2 days itinerary: day 1, Petronas Towers, KLCC Park, Aquaria KLCC and Bukit Bintang; day 2, Batu Caves in the morning, then Merdeka Square, Central Market and Petaling Street, finishing at KL Tower for sunset.

Kuala Lumpur 3 days itinerary: add a full day at Genting Highlands, or Putrajaya and the Lake Gardens with KL Bird Park.

Kuala Lumpur 4 days itinerary: add Sunway Lagoon or Malacca, plus an evening in Brickfields for Indian food and shopping. See our places to visit in Kuala Lumpur and Indian food in Kuala Lumpur guides.

Singapore and Malaysia itineraries

Many Indian travellers combine both countries in 5 to 7 days: for example 3 nights in Singapore for Sentosa and Universal Studios, then the express coach to Kuala Lumpur for 3 nights with Batu Caves and Genting. Our Singapore Malaysia tour packages range from 3 to 6 nights, and the Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by bus guide explains the coach journey.

Malaysia itinerary for senior citizens and young children

If you are travelling with grandparents or toddlers, slow the pace down. Choose one hotel for the whole stay so there is no repacking, keep the arrival day free, and plan just one main outing a day. Visit Batu Caves early in the morning; those who prefer not to climb the 272 steps can enjoy the statue, temples and shops at the foot of the hill. At Genting, the cable car is easier than a long winding drive, and indoor walkways connect the main hotels, mall and station. A private car with driver, rather than shared coaches, lets you stop whenever you need. Our Kuala Lumpur & Genting Family Escape is built this way, with private touring throughout.

Tips for planning your Malaysia trip

  • Keep day 1 light: flights from India often arrive tired and hungry.
  • Do Batu Caves and Genting early for cooler weather, clearer views and fewer crowds.
  • Avoid Mondays for the Petronas Towers (usually closed) and check Sunway Lagoon's closed days.
  • Allow buffer time for KL's rush-hour traffic and afternoon rain.
  • Submit your MDAC within 3 days before arrival; see our MDAC guide.
