The express coach is the most popular way to travel between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and it is how all our Singapore and Malaysia packages connect the two cities. It is comfortable, inexpensive and saves the time you would spend getting to and from airports. The journey takes about 5 to 6 hours, including two immigration stops at the border.
If you have never crossed a land border before, this guide explains exactly what happens, so you can relax and enjoy the ride.
How long does the bus take?
The road distance is about 350 kilometres. Driving time is around 4.5 to 5 hours, and the border crossing adds 30 minutes to an hour, or more on weekends, public holidays and school holidays, when traffic at the Causeway can be heavy. Most of our coaches leave Singapore in the morning, so you reach Kuala Lumpur by mid-afternoon with time to check in and, on some packages, start sightseeing.
Where the buses leave and arrive
Coaches leave from several points in Singapore, such as the Golden Mile Complex area, HarbourFront and other operator terminals, depending on the company. In Kuala Lumpur, they usually arrive at TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan), the city's main southern bus terminal, or at KL Sentral or other central drop-off points. On our packages, you have a private or arranged transfer from your Singapore hotel to the coach, and a transfer from the KL terminal to your hotel, so you never have to find your own way with luggage. Your voucher shows the exact departure point and time.
The border crossing, step by step
- Singapore exit (Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoint): about 30 to 60 minutes after departure, everyone gets off the coach with their passports and goes through Singapore immigration. Follow your driver's instructions about whether to take your bags.
- Back on the coach for the short drive across the Causeway (or the Second Link from Tuas) into Johor Bahru.
- Malaysia entry: get off again, usually with all your luggage, and go through Malaysian immigration and customs. Have your passport ready, and your MDAC submitted in advance.
- Rejoin your coach at the marked bay, and remember its company name and number plate. Drivers wait for all passengers, but stay with your group.
The process is reversed when travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, when you need a fresh SG Arrival Card for your arrival in Singapore.
Documents you need
- Passport valid for at least six months.
- Malaysia: visa-free entry for Indians for up to 30 days, currently until 31 December 2026, plus the free Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) submitted online before the journey.
- Singapore: a valid visa and SG Arrival Card when entering Singapore. If your trip goes back into Singapore, make sure your e-visa allows another entry.
- Your hotel booking and onward or return flight details, in case immigration asks.

Luggage
Each passenger can usually take one large suitcase in the hold and one small bag on board; check your coach company's allowance. At the Malaysian checkpoint you normally take all bags through customs, so pack so that you can manage your own luggage. Keep passports, money, medicines, chargers and snacks in your hand bag.
Money, SIM and food on the way
Carry a small amount of Malaysian ringgit for the rest stop, or use a card; many highway stops accept cards and e-wallets, but not all. If you use a Singapore SIM, check whether it includes Malaysia roaming; many tourist SIMs and eSIMs cover both countries, which saves buying a second card. Pack water and simple snacks, especially for children; the main rest stop usually has food courts with some vegetarian options, but choices are limited.
What if the coach is delayed?
Delays are most often caused by traffic at the Causeway or long immigration queues on weekends and holidays. Our transfer in Kuala Lumpur tracks the coach and waits for you, and on packages with sightseeing on the arrival day, the schedule is adjusted if the coach is late. Avoid booking flights out of Kuala Lumpur on the same day as the coach journey.
Comfort on board
Express coaches on this route are usually air-conditioned, with reclining seats and, on many services, two-plus-one seating with extra legroom. Some have charging points and Wi-Fi. Most coaches make a short rest stop on the highway with toilets and snacks. The air-conditioning can be cold, so carry a light jacket or shawl.
Tips for families and senior travellers
- Use the toilet before the border; queues at the checkpoint can be long.
- Carry water, snacks and something to keep children busy.
- Seniors who find getting on and off tiring can ask the driver for seats near the door.
- Choose a weekday departure if possible to avoid weekend border traffic.
- Keep a printout or screenshot of your coach ticket and transfer details.
Bus, train or flight?
Coach: the best balance of cost and convenience, city centre to city centre. Flight: about an hour in the air, but with airport transfers and check-in it takes most of a day, and costs more. Train: possible via Johor Bahru and Malaysia's ETS trains, but with more changes. That is why our packages use the express coach.
Packages that include the coach
All six of our Singapore and Malaysia packages include the coach ticket and the transfers at both ends: the Quick Escape and Private Short Escape (3 nights), the Budget Escape and Private Family Escape (4 nights), and the Family Adventure and KL, Genting, Sentosa & Universal Studios Getaway (6 nights). Compare them on our Singapore Malaysia tour packages page.

Do we get off the bus at the border?
Yes, twice: once for Singapore exit immigration and once for Malaysian entry, usually with your luggage at the Malaysian side.
Do Indians need a visa to travel by bus to Malaysia?
Not at present. Indians enter Malaysia visa-free for up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, with the free MDAC submitted before the journey.
Where does the bus arrive in Kuala Lumpur?
Usually at TBS bus terminal or a central drop-off point such as KL Sentral, depending on the operator. Our transfer meets you there.
Is the bus comfortable for senior citizens?
Yes, express coaches have reclining seats and air-conditioning. The border stops involve some walking and standing, so plan for that.
