Malaysia is one of the most affordable international holidays from India. Flights are short and competitive, Indian passport holders currently need no visa, and hotels, food and transport usually cost less than in Singapore or Dubai. But the final Malaysia trip cost still depends on when you travel, where you fly from, the hotels you choose and how many paid attractions you add.
This guide breaks down each part of a Malaysia trip budget from India, shows typical price ranges, includes sample budgets and explains the Indian taxes that apply to tour packages. All figures are indicative and change with season and exchange rates; for an exact price, send us your dates.
Is Malaysia expensive?
Not compared with most international destinations. A hawker meal costs a few hundred rupees, a Grab ride across Kuala Lumpur is usually cheaper than a taxi in Indian metros at peak times, and good 3 and 4-star hotels are available at reasonable prices. The biggest costs are flights in peak season, theme park tickets and premium hotels in Genting during weekends and holidays. With some planning, Malaysia is excellent value for families and couples.
1. Flights from India
Flights are often the largest single cost. Kuala Lumpur is about 4 hours from Chennai and Bengaluru and 5.5 to 6 hours from Delhi and Mumbai, served by low-cost and full-service airlines.
- From South India (Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Tiruchirappalli, Hyderabad): usually the cheapest routes. Return economy fares booked early can be roughly ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per person outside peak dates.
- From Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata: roughly ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 return when booked early.
- Peak periods (Diwali, Christmas and New Year, May and June holidays) can cost much more.
Low-cost fares often exclude checked baggage and meals, so compare the total price. Our packages are land-only, so you can choose your own flights or ask us to quote them.
2. Hotels
- Kuala Lumpur 3-star: roughly ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per room per night.
- Kuala Lumpur 4-star: roughly ₹5,000 to ₹9,000, with Bukit Bintang and KLCC at the higher end.
- Kuala Lumpur 5-star: from roughly ₹10,000 upwards; KL has some of Asia's best-value luxury hotels.
- Genting Highlands: very busy on weekends and holidays, when prices rise sharply; weekdays are much cheaper.
- Langkawi: from simple beach hotels to luxury rainforest resorts; December to February is the most expensive.
Add Malaysia's tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night, paid at the hotel, and possibly a refundable security deposit.
3. Attractions and tours
Typical ticket prices for international visitors (adults, indicative; check official websites for current rates):
- Petronas Twin Towers Skybridge and observation deck: roughly RM 80 to 100
- KL Tower: about RM 60 for the Observation Deck, about RM 110 for the Sky Deck with Sky Box
- Batu Caves: free to climb the main steps
- Awana SkyWay cable car: about RM 18 return for a standard gondola
- Genting SkyWorlds: one-day passes are priced by date, with online deals usually cheaper than the gate
- Sunway Lagoon: around RM 268 for adults and RM 200 for children at the gate
- Langkawi: SkyCab from roughly RM 40 to 50; shared island hopping from about RM 40; mangrove tours from about RM 70
Our Malaysia packages already include the city tour, Batu Caves, the Genting day and the cable car, and depending on the package, KL Tower or SkyWorlds tickets, which removes much of the guesswork.
4. Food
Food in Malaysia is delicious and good value. A hawker or food-court meal typically costs RM 10 to 20, an Indian banana-leaf meal or thali about RM 12 to 25, and a mid-range restaurant meal RM 40 to 80 per person. Allow roughly ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 per person per day for food, more in Genting, at hotels and at rooftop restaurants. Breakfast is included at your hotel on most of our packages. See our Indian food in Kuala Lumpur guide.
5. Local transport, SIM and extras
- Grab rides within central Kuala Lumpur are usually a few hundred rupees.
- KLIA Ekspres airport train: around RM 55 one way; our packages include private airport transfers instead.
- SIM or eSIM: tourist data plans are inexpensive, roughly ₹500 to ₹1,200 for a week.
- Travel insurance: strongly recommended; usually a few hundred to about ₹1,500 per person for a short trip.
- Shopping: budget separately for chocolates, souvenirs and malls.
6. Visa, GST and TCS
The Malaysia visa currently costs nothing for Indians, as visa-free entry for up to 30 days runs until 31 December 2026, and the MDAC arrival card is free. See our Malaysia visa guide.
When you buy an overseas tour package from an Indian tour operator, GST at 5% applies to the package price, and TCS (tax collected at source) is collected on overseas tour packages. Since 1 April 2026, TCS on overseas tour packages is a flat 2%. TCS is not an extra cost in the long run: it is credited against your PAN and can be adjusted against your income tax or claimed as a refund when you file your return. Our quotes show these clearly.
Sample Malaysia trip budgets
Indicative per-person costs for a 4-day, 3-night Kuala Lumpur and Genting trip, sharing a double room, including return flights:
| Trip style | What it looks like | Approximate cost per person |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | 3-star hotel, shared or self-guided sightseeing, early-booked low-cost flights, hawker food | ₹35,000 to ₹45,000 |
| Mid-range | 4-star hotel, private transfers, city tour, Genting with cable car, KL Tower | ₹45,000 to ₹70,000 |
| Premium | 5-star hotels, private touring, Genting night with SkyWorlds, full-service flights | ₹70,000 and above |
For a Malaysia trip cost for 2, double these figures. A 7-day trip with Langkawi adds a domestic flight, 3 more hotel nights and island tours. These are estimates, not quotes; prices change with dates, fares and exchange rates.
How to save money on a Malaysia trip
- Travel off-peak: avoid Diwali, Christmas and New Year and Malaysian holidays if you can.
- Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for the best flight and hotel prices.
- Visit Genting on a weekday, when hotels and queues are lighter.
- Buy attraction tickets online or as part of a package.
- Eat where locals eat: food courts, hawker centres and Indian restaurants in Brickfields.
- Choose a package that bundles transfers and the main tickets, so there are no surprise costs on arrival.
