Georgia is compact, so a well-planned Georgia itinerary covers a lot without long drives. Almost every trip starts in Tbilisi and heads north on the Georgian Military Road to Gudauri and Kazbegi, with a day in Kakheti wine country. Longer trips add Batumi on the Black Sea or western Georgia's caves and canyons.

Below are day-by-day plans for 5, 6, 7 and 10 days, plus winter and honeymoon versions. Travel times are approximate and depend on weather and traffic. We plan every Georgia trip as a custom itinerary, so treat these as a starting point.

Before you plan: how to get around

  • Private car and driver: the most comfortable way to tour Georgia, especially for families and seniors. Drivers know the mountain roads and photo stops.
  • Tbilisi to Kazbegi: about 3 hours by road via Ananuri and Gudauri. In winter, heavy snow can close the Jvari Pass for a while, so keep a buffer day.
  • Tbilisi to Batumi: about 5 to 5.5 hours by train, or fly into one city and out of the other.
  • Base in Tbilisi: Mtskheta, Kakheti and Uplistsikhe all work as day trips.

5-day Georgia itinerary: Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Mtskheta

Best for: first-time visitors and short breaks.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi. Transfer to your hotel. Evening walk on Rustaveli Avenue or in the Old Town.
  • Day 2: Tbilisi city tour. Old Town, Narikala Fortress by cable car, the sulphur baths area, Bridge of Peace and Holy Trinity Cathedral.
  • Day 3: Ananuri, Gudauri and Kazbegi. Drive the Georgian Military Road, stop at Ananuri Fortress and the Friendship Monument viewpoint, continue to Kazbegi and visit Gergeti Trinity Church. Overnight in Kazbegi.
  • Day 4: Kazbegi to Tbilisi via Mtskheta. Morning mountain views, return south and visit Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta.
  • Day 5: Depart. Free time for shopping at the Dry Bridge market, then transfer to the airport.

6-day Georgia itinerary: add Kakheti wine country

Best for: the classic Georgia trip, couples and families.

  • Days 1 to 4: as the 5-day plan above.
  • Day 5: Kakheti and Sighnaghi. Day trip east to Sighnaghi, the hilltop "city of love", Bodbe Monastery and a family winery for tasting and a Georgian lunch. Return to Tbilisi.
  • Day 6: Depart.

This 5-night plan is the most popular choice for Indian travellers. See what it costs in our Georgia trip cost from India guide.

7-day Georgia itinerary: Tbilisi, mountains and Batumi

Best for: summer trips (June to September) and travellers who want the sea as well as the mountains.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi.
  • Day 2: Tbilisi city tour.
  • Day 3: Ananuri, Gudauri and Kazbegi, overnight in Kazbegi.
  • Day 4: Return to Tbilisi via Mtskheta.
  • Day 5: Train or drive to Batumi (about 5 to 5.5 hours by train). Evening on the Black Sea boulevard and the Ali and Nino statue.
  • Day 6: Batumi: botanical garden, beach time, Gonio fortress or a trip to Makhuntseti waterfall.
  • Day 7: Depart from Batumi, or return to Tbilisi for your flight.

More in our Batumi guide.

10-day Georgia itinerary: the full loop

Best for: travellers who want to see Georgia properly, at an easy pace.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi.
  • Day 2: Tbilisi city tour.
  • Day 3: Mtskheta, then on to Ananuri, Gudauri and Kazbegi.
  • Day 4: Kazbegi: Gergeti Trinity Church, Truso Valley or the Gveleti waterfall walk (summer).
  • Day 5: Return to Tbilisi; evening free.
  • Day 6: Kakheti: Sighnaghi, Bodbe Monastery and wineries.
  • Day 7: Uplistsikhe cave town and Gori, continue to Borjomi or Kutaisi.
  • Day 8: Kutaisi area: Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon, continue to Batumi.
  • Day 9: Batumi: boulevard, botanical garden and beach time.
  • Day 10: Depart from Batumi or Kutaisi, or return to Tbilisi.

Winter Georgia itinerary: snow in Gudauri

Best for: December to March, families who want snow.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi.
  • Day 2: Tbilisi city tour, with an evening at the Christmas lights in December.
  • Day 3: Drive to Gudauri via Ananuri. Afternoon on the snow: cable car rides or a beginner ski lesson.
  • Day 4: Gudauri: skiing, snowmobile or paragliding over the snow. Visit Kazbegi if the road is open.
  • Day 5: Return to Tbilisi via Mtskheta.
  • Day 6: Depart.

Keep one flexible day, as snowfall can close the road over the Jvari Pass for a few hours or days. See our Kazbegi and Gudauri guide.

Georgia honeymoon itinerary

For couples, we suggest 6 to 7 days: two nights in a boutique hotel in Tbilisi's Old Town, a night with mountain views in Kazbegi, a night in Sighnaghi among the vineyards, and, in summer, two nights in Batumi. Add a private wine tasting, a sunset at Narikala Fortress and a private room at the sulphur baths. The best time to visit Georgia for a honeymoon is May to June or September to October.

Tips for planning your Georgia itinerary

  • Do not try to see everything in 5 days: Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti are plenty for a first trip.
  • Stay one night in Kazbegi rather than doing it as a long day trip; mornings there are beautiful.
  • Keep Batumi for summer trips of 7 days or more.
  • Seniors should allow time to adjust at Gudauri and Kazbegi, which are at about 2,000 metres or more.
  • Arrange your Georgia e-visa 2 to 3 weeks before travel.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Georgia?

5 to 6 days covers Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Gudauri, Mtskheta and Kakheti. Add 2 days for Batumi, or plan 10 days to include western Georgia.

What is the best Georgia itinerary for 5 days?

Two days in Tbilisi, an overnight trip to Kazbegi via Ananuri and Gudauri, and a stop at Mtskheta on the way back.

Should I stay overnight in Kazbegi?

Yes, if you can. It is about 3 hours from Tbilisi, and staying a night gives you a relaxed visit to Gergeti Trinity Church and the best morning views.

Can I include Batumi in a 6-day trip?

It is possible but rushed. Batumi is about 5 to 5.5 hours from Tbilisi by train, so it works better on trips of 7 days or more.

Is Georgia suitable for senior citizens?

Yes, with a private car and driver and a relaxed pace. Allow time at higher places such as Gudauri and Kazbegi, and avoid long walks on steep cobbled streets.
