The drive north from Tbilisi into the Greater Caucasus is the moment most travellers fall for Georgia. In about three hours, the Georgian Military Road climbs from vineyards to a medieval fortress on a turquoise lake, through the ski resort of Gudauri, over the high Jvari Pass and down to Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits on a ridge beneath the snowy peak of Mount Kazbek.

This guide explains how to go from Tbilisi to Kazbegi, what to see on the way, Gudauri in winter and summer, the best time to visit and where to stay. We include this route in nearly every custom trip on our Georgia tour packages page.

Tbilisi to Kazbegi: the Georgian Military Road

Kazbegi (the town's official name is Stepantsminda) is roughly 150 km from Tbilisi, about 3 hours by road without stops. With photo stops, plan a full day. The usual stops, in order:

  1. Zhinvali Reservoir viewpoint: a wide turquoise lake with mountains behind.
  2. Ananuri Fortress: a 17th-century fortress with two churches on the lake shore; climb the tower for the view.
  3. Pasanauri: a village famous for khinkali, a good lunch stop.
  4. Gudauri and the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument: a large curved mosaic viewpoint over the Devil's Valley, very popular for photos.
  5. Jvari Pass: the highest point of the road, about 2,379 m.
  6. Stepantsminda: the town and base for Gergeti.

A private car with driver is by far the most comfortable option, especially for families and seniors. Shared minibuses (marshrutkas) run from Tbilisi but do not stop for sights.

Gergeti Trinity Church and Mount Kazbek

The 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church stands at about 2,170 m on a ridge above Stepantsminda, with Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) rising behind it. It is one of the most photographed views in Georgia.

  • By 4x4: local jeeps or your driver can take you up the road in about 20 minutes; this is what most of our guests choose.
  • On foot: the hiking trail takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours uphill from town.

It is an active church: cover shoulders and knees, and women should carry a scarf. Mornings are often clearest; clouds tend to build around Kazbek in the afternoon.

More things to do in Kazbegi

  • Gveleti waterfall: a short, moderate walk near the Dariali Gorge, close to the Russian border.
  • Dariali Monastery: a modern monastery complex in the dramatic gorge.
  • Truso Valley: a beautiful hike or jeep trip past mineral springs and abandoned villages, best June to October.
  • Juta: a high valley with walks towards the Chaukhi peaks, best in summer.
  • Just relax: many hotels in Stepantsminda have big windows facing Kazbek; a slow evening with that view is the point of staying overnight.

Gudauri: snow, skiing and paragliding

Gudauri sits at about 2,200 m and is Georgia's best-known ski resort, around 2 to 2.5 hours from Tbilisi. For many Indian travellers it is the easiest place to see real snow in winter.

  • Ski season: roughly mid-December to April, depending on snowfall. Gondolas and chairlifts make it suitable for beginners, and ski schools and equipment rental are available.
  • Not skiing? Snow play, gondola rides, snowmobile rides and simply enjoying the views work well for families.
  • Paragliding: tandem flights over the valley are popular in both winter and summer, weather permitting.
  • Summer: green slopes, hiking, horse riding and cooler air than Tbilisi.

Activity prices change by season; we confirm them when we plan your trip.

Best time to visit Kazbegi and Gudauri

  • June to September: green valleys, wildflowers and the best hiking; the road is reliable.
  • Late September to October: autumn colours and fresh snow on the peaks; cooler nights.
  • December to March: snow season. Gudauri is in full swing, Kazbegi looks magical, but the road over the Jvari Pass can close for some hours or days after heavy snowfall or avalanche risk.
  • April to May: spring thaw; lower valleys turn green while peaks stay white.

In winter, keep a buffer night in your plan and avoid booking a flight home on the day after a Kazbegi stay. More detail in our best time to visit Georgia guide.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi is possible but long: about 6 hours of driving plus stops. We recommend at least one night in Kazbegi or Gudauri. You see Gergeti in the clear morning light, avoid rushing on mountain roads in the dark, and the hotels with Kazbek views are a highlight in themselves. Families going for snow often prefer two nights in Gudauri.

Where to stay

  • Stepantsminda (Kazbegi): from simple guesthouses to design hotels with mountain views. Book view rooms early for summer weekends.
  • Gudauri: ski hotels and apartments near the lifts; busiest and most expensive from late December to early January and on weekends in the snow season.

Altitude and practical tips

  • Altitude: 1,700 to 2,400 m is moderate. Most people feel fine; walk slowly, drink water and take it easy if you have heart or breathing conditions.
  • Clothing: even in summer, carry a warm layer and a windproof jacket. In winter you need proper snow boots, gloves and thermals.
  • Food: choices are fewer than in Tbilisi; veg khinkali, khachapuri and lobio are easy to find. Carry snacks for children.
  • Border area: Kazbegi is near the Russian border at Upper Lars; stay on the main tourist routes.
