The best time to visit Georgia is May to June and September to October. Days are pleasant for sightseeing in Tbilisi, the mountain roads to Kazbegi are open, and the countryside is green in spring or golden during the autumn wine harvest. If you want snow, plan for December to March, when Gudauri becomes a ski resort.
Georgia is a small country with very different climates: hot summers in Tbilisi, snowy peaks in the Greater Caucasus and a humid, subtropical coast at Batumi. This guide breaks down Georgia's weather by season and month, so you can choose the right time for your trip. Temperatures are approximate; weather varies from year to year.
Georgia seasons at a glance
- Spring (April to June): mild and green, wildflowers in the mountains, some rain. One of the best times overall.
- Summer (July to August): hot in Tbilisi (often 30 to 35°C), cool in the mountains, beach season in Batumi. Busiest and priciest period.
- Autumn (September to October): warm days, clear skies, autumn colours and the Rtveli wine harvest in Kakheti. Excellent for couples and seniors.
- Winter (December to March): cold in Tbilisi (around 0 to 8°C, little snow in the city), heavy snow in Gudauri and Kazbegi, skiing and snow activities.
Georgia weather by month
- January: coldest month. Tbilisi is chilly but usually dry; Gudauri has deep snow and the ski season is in full swing.
- February: still cold with good snow in the mountains. Fewer tourists in the city and lower hotel prices.
- March: late winter. Skiing continues in Gudauri; Tbilisi starts to warm up by the end of the month.
- April: spring arrives, fruit trees bloom, and temperatures in Tbilisi reach the high teens. Ski season winds down in Gudauri.
- May: one of the best months. Green hills, comfortable days in the low to mid 20s°C and snow still on the high peaks for photos.
- June: warm and long days; mountain hikes in Kazbegi and Truso Valley open up. Peak season begins in late June.
- July: hot in Tbilisi, ideal weather in the mountains, and the Batumi beach season is at its peak.
- August: similar to July: hot cities, busy beaches, cool mountain air. Book hotels and visas early.
- September: the heat eases, skies are clear and the grape harvest begins. One of the best months.
- October: autumn colours, wine festivals in Kakheti, crisp mornings in the mountains. Excellent for sightseeing.
- November: cooler and quieter, with the first snow on the peaks. Good value, but pack warm layers.
- December: winter returns. Gudauri's ski season usually starts mid-December; Tbilisi is lit up for Christmas and New Year.
Best time for snow in Georgia
If your family wants to see snow, Georgia is one of the closest snow destinations to India. The Gudauri ski season usually runs from mid-December to April, with the most reliable snow in January and February. Gudauri sits at about 2,200 metres on the Georgian Military Road, around 2 to 2.5 hours from Tbilisi.
- Beginners can take ski or snowboard lessons; non-skiers enjoy cable cars, snowmobiles and paragliding over the snowy valleys.
- Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and the Gergeti Trinity Church look spectacular under snow.
- After heavy snowfall, the road over the Jvari Pass (about 2,379 m) can close for a few hours or days, so keep a buffer day in winter trips.

Best time to visit Georgia for honeymoon
For couples, May to June and September to October are ideal. The weather suits long walks in Tbilisi's Old Town, mountain views in Kazbegi and wine tasting in Sighnaghi, the hilltop town often called the "city of love". Winter honeymoons are lovely too if you want snow and cosy mountain hotels.
Best time to visit Batumi
Batumi, on the Black Sea, is wetter than the rest of Georgia and has a subtropical climate. The beach season runs from June to September, when the sea is warm enough for swimming. Expect rain at any time of year, especially in autumn. Spring and autumn are fine for sightseeing in the city, but not for the beach. See our Batumi guide.
Cheapest time to visit Georgia
Prices are lowest in November and from late January to March (outside Gudauri's busy ski weeks), and in early spring. Flights from India and hotels cost the most in May and June school holidays, in July and August, and over Christmas and New Year. What to pack for each season
