Georgia packs a remarkable amount into a small country. In a week you can walk the old streets of Tbilisi, stand beneath snow peaks in Kazbegi, taste wine in Kakheti and, if you have more time, relax by the Black Sea in Batumi. Distances are short, so most sights work as day trips from Tbilisi or as one or two-night stops.
Here are the best places to visit in Georgia, grouped by region, with notes on how much time each one needs. Use it with our Georgia itinerary guide to plan your route.
Tbilisi
1. Tbilisi Old Town
Georgia's capital is the starting point of almost every trip. Wander the lanes of the Old Town, with its carved wooden balconies, churches and cafés, and cross the glass Bridge of Peace over the Mtkvari river.
2. Narikala Fortress and the cable car
Ride the cable car from Rike Park up to the ancient Narikala Fortress for the best views over the city, then walk down through the Old Town.
3. Abanotubani sulphur baths
Tbilisi's domed sulphur bathhouses are a city tradition. Book a private room for an hour of soaking.
4. Holy Trinity (Sameba) Cathedral and Rustaveli Avenue
See one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the region, then stroll Rustaveli Avenue past the theatres and museums.
5. Mtatsminda Park and the Dry Bridge market
Take the funicular up to Mtatsminda Park for evening views and rides, and browse Soviet-era souvenirs, paintings and old cameras at the Dry Bridge flea market.
Plan 2 days for Tbilisi. More in our Tbilisi guide.
Around Tbilisi: Mtskheta and Uplistsikhe
6. Mtskheta
Just 20 to 30 minutes from Tbilisi, Georgia's ancient capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in town and the hilltop Jvari Monastery, which looks down on the meeting of two rivers.
7. Uplistsikhe cave town and Gori
An ancient rock-cut town of halls, tunnels and temples carved into a cliff, about 1.5 hours west of Tbilisi. It pairs well with a stop in Gori.
The Greater Caucasus: Ananuri, Gudauri and Kazbegi
8. Ananuri Fortress
A fortress and church complex above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir, the first big photo stop on the Georgian Military Road.
9. Gudauri
Georgia's best-known ski resort at about 2,200 metres. In winter it is all about skiing and snow; in summer, paragliding and mountain views. Stop at the colourful Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument viewpoint above the Devil's Valley.
10. Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) and Gergeti Trinity Church
The highlight of many Georgia trips: the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church at about 2,170 metres, with Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) rising behind it. Kazbegi is about 3 hours by road from Tbilisi.
11. Truso Valley and Gveleti waterfall
Easy to moderate walks near Kazbegi, best from June to September, with mineral springs, old towers and waterfalls in the Dariali gorge area.

Kakheti wine country
12. Sighnaghi
A hilltop town with old defensive walls and views across the Alazani valley to the Caucasus. It is often called the "city of love" and is a favourite with honeymooners.
13. Bodbe Monastery
A peaceful monastery and gardens just outside Sighnaghi.
14. Kakheti wineries
Georgia has one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world, with wine aged in clay qvevri jars. Visit a family winery for tastings and a traditional lunch. The Rtveli harvest season runs from late September to October.
Western Georgia: Kutaisi, caves and canyons
15. Kutaisi
Georgia's third city, with the Bagrati Cathedral and the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery nearby. Kutaisi also has its own airport.
16. Prometheus Cave
A large, lit cave system with stalactites and underground rivers, a short drive from Kutaisi.
17. Martvili and Okatse canyons
Turquoise water, boat rides and walkways hanging over the gorge: a refreshing day out in summer.
18. Borjomi
A spa town famous for its mineral water, with a park and forest walks in the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.
The Black Sea coast and the high mountains
19. Batumi
Georgia's seaside city, with a long Black Sea boulevard, modern architecture, the moving Ali and Nino statue, the Alphabet Tower and a large botanical garden. Beach season is June to September. See our Batumi guide.
20. Svaneti: Mestia and Ushguli
Remote mountain villages with medieval stone towers, among the most dramatic scenery in Georgia. Svaneti is far from Tbilisi and best from June to September, so it suits longer trips and keen travellers.
How to combine these places
- 5 to 6 days: Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Ananuri, Gudauri, Kazbegi and a day in Kakheti (Sighnaghi).
- 7 to 8 days: add Batumi, or western Georgia (Kutaisi, Prometheus Cave, Martvili Canyon).
- 10 days or more: add Borjomi, Uplistsikhe or Svaneti.
Check the best time to visit Georgia before you fix your route: mountain roads and Svaneti are easiest from late spring to autumn, while Gudauri is best in winter for snow. For a custom trip covering your choice of places, see our Georgia tour packages.
