How many days do you need in Bali, and how should you spend them? Because Bali's traffic can be slow, the secret to a good Bali itinerary is to group your sightseeing by area and split your stay between two or three bases, rather than driving long distances every day.

Here are tried-and-tested plans for 3 to 10 days, based on the routes of our most popular packages. Each assumes you fly in from India and land in the morning, which is typical for direct and one-stop flights.

How many days in Bali?

  • 3 to 4 days: one beach base plus a day each in Ubud and at the temples. Good for a short break or stopover.
  • 5 to 6 days: the ideal first trip: Ubud and a beach area, with water sports and temples.
  • 7 to 8 days: add Nusa Penida or a night on the Gili Islands, plus a free day.
  • 9 to 10 days: three areas, Nusa Penida, the Gilis and plenty of time to relax.

Bali 3 days itinerary

Day 1: arrive, check in at Kuta or Seminyak, sunset on the beach.

Day 2: Kintamani volcano, Ubud villages, Tegallalang rice terraces and a coffee plantation.

Day 3: morning water sports at Tanjung Benoa or shopping, then Uluwatu temple for sunset before an evening flight.

With just three days, stay in one beach area to avoid hotel changes.

Bali 4 days itinerary

Day 1: arrive in Kuta; evening at the beach and Beachwalk.

Day 2: Tanjung Benoa water sports in the morning; free afternoon.

Day 3: move to Seminyak via the Kintamani volcano and Ubud villages.

Day 4: Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temples for sunset; departure that night or the next morning.

This is close to our Bali 4 nights 5 days package in Kuta and Seminyak.

Bali itinerary for 5 days

Day 1: arrive and transfer to Ubud; evening at Ubud Palace and market.

Day 2: Kintamani volcano, Tegallalang, a coffee plantation and the craft villages.

Day 3: transfer to Seminyak; afternoon on the beach and sunset at a beach club.

Day 4: Tanjung Benoa water sports in the morning; afternoon spa.

Day 5: Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temples with the Kecak dance at sunset.

Day 6: departure.

This Bali itinerary for 5 days follows our Ubud Culture & Seminyak Beach Holiday, our top pick for a first trip.

Bali 6 days itinerary

Follow the 5-day plan and add a full day on Nusa Penida for Kelingking Beach, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay. Alternatively, spend four nights in Kuta and two in Seminyak, as on our Bali 6 nights 7 days package, which includes water sports, the volcano, the temples and Nusa Penida.

Bali itinerary 7 days

Days 1 to 3, Kuta: arrival, Tanjung Benoa water sports, and the Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temple tour.

Days 4 to 5, Ubud: transfer to Ubud; Kintamani volcano and Ubud villages; free evening for a dance show.

Days 6 to 7, Seminyak: transfer to Seminyak; full-day Nusa Penida tour.

Day 8: departure.

This Bali 7 days itinerary is our Bali Kuta, Ubud & Seminyak Explorer. For an island twist, swap Seminyak for the Gili Islands, as on the Kuta, Gili Island & Seminyak Bali Holiday.

Bali 10 days itinerary

Days 1 to 3, Kuta: arrival, water sports, temples.

Days 4 to 5, Gili Islands: fast boat to Gili Trawangan; snorkelling with turtles and a free day.

Days 6 to 7, Ubud: volcano, rice terraces, Monkey Forest and an optional Mount Batur sunrise trek.

Days 8 to 10, Seminyak or Nusa Dua: Nusa Penida tour, spa and beach days.

Day 11: departure.

Bali honeymoon itinerary

For couples, slow the pace: two or three nights in an Ubud pool villa with the Bali Swing and a couple's spa, then three or four nights in Seminyak or Nusa Dua with a sunset dinner, and optionally a night or two on the Gili Islands. See our Bali honeymoon packages.

Choosing between Nusa Penida and the Gili Islands

With limited time, many travellers ask whether to do Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands. Nusa Penida is a day trip with spectacular cliffs and viewpoints, but a long, active day. The Gili Islands need at least one night and are about relaxing: snorkelling with turtles, cycling and sunsets. Choose Nusa Penida for views and photos, and the Gilis for a slower island escape. Our longer packages include both.

Tips for planning your Bali trip

  • Group sights by area: Ubud and Kintamani together; Tanah Lot and Uluwatu together; Tanjung Benoa near Nusa Dua.
  • Keep day 1 light: rest after the flight.
  • Visit popular sights early for cooler weather and fewer crowds.
  • Allow buffer days for boats: Nusa Penida and Gili trips depend on sea conditions.
  • Check Nyepi: the island closes for 24 hours on the Day of Silence, usually in March.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Bali?

Five to seven days are ideal for a first visit; add two or three days for the Gili Islands or a relaxed honeymoon.

Is 4 days enough for Bali?

Yes, for the highlights: water sports, the Kintamani volcano and Ubud villages, and the Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temples.

What is the best 7-day Bali itinerary?

Three nights in Kuta, two in Ubud and two in Seminyak, with water sports, temples, the volcano and Nusa Penida.

Should I stay in Ubud or the beach?

Both. Two nights in Ubud for culture and nature, and the rest at a beach area, is the best balance.

Can I visit the Gili Islands on a 5-day trip?

It is possible with one night on the Gilis, but six or more days gives a more relaxed pace.

How should I plan a Bali trip from India?

Choose your dates and areas, book flights and a package, apply for the e-VOA, fill in the arrival card and pay the Bali levy before you fly.
