Choosing where to stay in Bali shapes your whole holiday. Bali's traffic can be slow, and the main areas feel very different: lively Kuta, stylish Seminyak, laid-back Canggu, luxurious Nusa Dua, clifftop Uluwatu, cultural Ubud and quiet Sanur. The best plan for most travellers is to split the stay between two areas, usually Ubud and a beach.

This guide compares the best areas to stay in Bali, who each one suits, and the types of hotels and villas you will find, so you can choose the right combination for your trip.

Kuta and Legian: convenient and lively

Kuta is Bali's original beach town, 10 minutes from the airport. Its long sandy beach is great for surf lessons and sunsets, and the area is packed with shops, malls such as Beachwalk, restaurants, bars and the Waterbom water park. Neighbouring Legian is slightly calmer. Kuta hotels range from budget to good four-star resorts, and there are many Indian restaurants nearby.

Best for: first-time visitors, families who want convenience, shoppers and budget travellers. Less suited to: those seeking peace and quiet. Kuta is the starting point for many of our packages, such as the Bali Beach, Volcano & Temple Escape.

Seminyak: stylish beaches and dining

Just north of Kuta, Seminyak is Bali's chic beach district, with designer boutiques, excellent restaurants, sunset beach clubs and many villas with private pools. Seminyak Beach is famous for beanbags and cocktails at sunset. Seminyak hotels lean towards boutique four and five-star properties and villas.

Best for: couples, honeymooners, foodies and groups of friends. Our Ubud Culture & Seminyak Beach Holiday pairs Seminyak with Ubud.

Canggu: surf and cafés

Further up the west coast, Canggu is popular with younger travellers and digital nomads for its surf beaches, cafés, beach clubs and rice-field views. It has a relaxed, creative vibe, but traffic can be heavy and the beaches have strong waves.

Best for: young couples, friends and surfers.

Nusa Dua and Tanjung Benoa: calm beaches and resorts

Nusa Dua, on the southern peninsula, is a planned resort area with large international hotels set in landscaped gardens along a calm, clean beach. Next door, Tanjung Benoa is Bali's water sports centre. Nusa Dua resorts are mostly five-star, with kids' clubs and lagoon pools, and the area is quieter and very safe.

Best for: families, senior citizens, honeymooners who want luxury, and anyone who wants calm water. See our Ubud Culture & Nusa Dua Beach Escape.

Jimbaran and Uluwatu: sunsets and cliffs

Jimbaran is a sweeping bay known for seafood dinners on the sand at sunset, with luxury resorts on the hillside. Further south, Uluwatu has dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches, surf breaks and some of Bali's most spectacular clifftop villas and restaurants.

Best for: honeymooners and travellers who want views and seclusion. Uluwatu is further from Ubud and the north.

Ubud: culture, nature and villas

Ubud is inland, among rice terraces and jungle valleys, with temples, markets, art, yoga and spas. Ubud hotels range from guesthouses in town to resorts and private pool villas overlooking rivers and rice fields, many of them perfect for a honeymoon. There is no beach.

Best for: culture, nature, wellness and romance. Two or three nights here is ideal. Read our Ubud guide.

Sanur: quiet and family-friendly

Sanur, on the east coast, has a calm, reef-protected beach with a long seafront path for walking and cycling, and a relaxed, older crowd. It is also the departure point for boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan.

Best for: families with young children and senior travellers.

Villas with private pools

One of Bali's great luxuries is a villa with a private pool, available in Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Jimbaran and Uluwatu at prices far below the Maldives. Villas range from one-bedroom honeymoon villas with floating breakfasts to multi-bedroom family villas with a cook and staff. They are ideal for honeymooners and large families. Any of our packages can be upgraded to a Bali villa; see our Bali honeymoon packages.

Hotels, resorts or villas?

Hotels in Kuta and Seminyak are convenient and good value, with pools, restaurants and easy access to the beach. Resorts in Nusa Dua and Jimbaran offer large grounds, several restaurants, kids' clubs and beachfront locations. Private pool villas give the most privacy and space, ideal for honeymooners and families who want their own pool. Many travellers mix them: a villa for two nights in Ubud, then a resort on the beach. When choosing, check the distance to the beach, whether breakfast is included, and the travel time to the sights you want to see.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best area to stay in Bali for first-timers?

Combine Ubud with Seminyak or Kuta. Kuta is closest to the airport and very convenient; Seminyak is more stylish.

Is Kuta or Seminyak better?

Kuta is busier, cheaper and better for shopping and families; Seminyak is quieter, more upmarket and better for couples and dining.

Where should families stay in Bali?

Nusa Dua for calm beaches and big resorts, Kuta for convenience and Waterbom, or Sanur for a quiet, shallow beach.

Where is the best place to stay in Bali for a honeymoon?

An Ubud villa for romance and nature, followed by Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran or Uluwatu for the beach.

Should I stay in one place or two in Bali?

Two areas work best for most trips: Ubud for culture and a beach area for relaxation, because daily drives between them take time.
