The right Kerala itinerary depends on how many days you have and what you want most: tea hills, wildlife, the backwaters or the beach. This guide sets out our tried-and-tested Kerala trip plans from Kochi, from a four-day taster to an eight-day trip that ends on the beach. For each one you'll find the route, who it suits and a link to the full day-by-day plan. You'll also find the drive times between Kerala's main stops and the tips that make the difference between a rushed trip and a relaxed one.
How to Plan a Kerala Trip
Most Kerala trips are built from the same few pieces:
- Start in Kochi. It has the best flight connections and sits in the middle of the state, within a few hours of the hills and the backwaters.
- Spend at least two nights in Munnar. The drive up takes about four hours, so one night leaves no time to see anything.
- Add Thekkady for wildlife. It sits neatly between Munnar and the backwaters, so it adds a day without adding much driving.
- Finish on the water. A night on an Alleppey houseboat or at a lakeside resort is the most relaxing way to end a trip, and Alleppey is only two hours from Kochi airport.
- Add a beach if you have 7 days or more. Kovalam and Varkala are in the far south, so flying out of Trivandrum saves a long drive back.
Kerala Drive Times
Roads in Kerala's hills are narrow and winding, so distances take longer than you'd expect. These are typical driving times with short stops.
Route | Drive time |
|---|---|
Kochi → Munnar | About 4 hours |
Kochi → Alleppey | About 2 hours |
Kochi → Thekkady | 4–5 hours |
Munnar → Thekkady | 3–4 hours |
Munnar → Alleppey | About 5 hours |
Munnar → Vagamon | About 4 hours |
Thekkady → Alleppey | About 4 hours |
Vagamon → Alleppey | About 3 hours |
Alleppey → Kovalam | 4–5 hours |
Kochi → Athirapilly | About 2 hours |
Kovalam → Trivandrum airport | About 30 minutes |

Kerala Itinerary for 4 Days
Four days is enough for the two things most people come to Kerala for: the tea hills and the backwaters.
Option 1: Munnar and a houseboat. Board a private houseboat in Alleppey on the day you land, cruise the backwaters overnight, then drive up to Munnar for two nights. Best if your flight reaches Kochi by about 10 am. See the full Kerala 4 Days Itinerary.
- Day 1: Kochi to Alleppey, houseboat cruise
- Day 2: Alleppey to Munnar
- Day 3: Munnar sightseeing
- Day 4: Munnar to Kochi
Option 2: Munnar and a lakeside resort. Two nights in Munnar first, then a night at a backwater resort, with no noon houseboat deadline on arrival day. See the Munnar & Alleppey 4-day tour.
Kerala Itinerary for 5 Days
Five days adds Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger Reserve, making this the classic first-time Kerala tour itinerary. No single drive is longer than about four hours. See the full Kerala 5 Days Itinerary.
- Day 1: Kochi to Munnar
- Day 2: Munnar sightseeing
- Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady, Periyar Lake boat ride
- Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey, backwater resort
- Day 5: Alleppey to Kochi, Fort Kochi
Kerala Itinerary for 6 Days
With six days, give Munnar a third night. The extra day takes you to the sandalwood forest of Marayoor and the dry hills of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, before Thekkady and a houseboat night. See the full Kerala 6 Days Itinerary.
- Days 1–3: Munnar, including a day trip to Marayoor and Chinnar
- Day 4: Thekkady
- Day 5: Alleppey houseboat
- Day 6: back to Kochi
Kerala Itinerary for 7 Days
A week lets you slow down: two nights in Munnar, two in Thekkady with a free day for a forest trek, bamboo rafting or Gavi, then a resort night and a houseboat night in Alleppey. See the full Kerala 7 Days Itinerary.
- Days 1–2: Munnar
- Days 3–4: Thekkady, with a free day
- Day 5: Alleppey resort
- Day 6: Alleppey houseboat
- Day 7: back to Kochi
Kerala Itinerary for 8 Days
Eight days is enough to add the beach. Our favourite route combines two contrasting hill stations, Munnar and the quiet meadows of Vagamon, with a houseboat, a lakeside resort and two nights at Kovalam, flying out of Trivandrum. See the Vagamon, Munnar & Kovalam tour.
- Days 1–2: Munnar
- Day 3: Vagamon
- Day 4: Alleppey houseboat
- Day 5: Alleppey resort
- Days 6–7: Kovalam, with Trivandrum sightseeing
- Day 8: fly out of Trivandrum
Kerala Trip Plan Tips
- Arrive early. A morning arrival in Kochi gives you daylight for the hill drive or time to board a houseboat at noon.
- Avoid driving the hills after dark. Plan long drives to finish by early evening.
- Check closing days. The Munnar Tea Museum and Trivandrum's museums close on Mondays; Mattancherry Palace on Fridays; the Paradesi Synagogue on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Book Periyar boating and houseboats early for December and January, when they sell out.
- Eravikulam National Park usually closes for a few weeks between February and April for the Nilgiri tahr calving season.
- Leave a buffer in the monsoon. Heavy rain can slow hill roads, so avoid tight connections on your last day.

Kerala Itinerary FAQs
How many days are enough for a Kerala trip?
Five to seven days is ideal for a first visit. Five days covers Munnar, Thekkady and the Alleppey backwaters; seven days adds a free day and a houseboat night at a relaxed pace. With four days, choose Munnar and the backwaters; with eight or more, add a beach.
What is the best Kerala itinerary for first-time visitors?
The 5-day route of Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey is the best Kerala itinerary for most first-time visitors. It covers the hills, wildlife and backwaters, starts and ends in Kochi, and no drive is longer than about four hours.
Should I start my Kerala trip with Munnar or the backwaters?
Start with Munnar if you land later in the day or want to finish relaxing by the water. Start with the houseboat only if you reach Kochi by about 10 am, as houseboats board around noon.
Can I include a beach in a Kerala trip plan?
Yes, with seven or eight days or more. Kovalam and Varkala are in the south, four to five hours from Alleppey, so it's best to end your trip there and fly out of Trivandrum.
Which airport should I fly into for Kerala?
Kochi is the best airport for most Kerala itineraries, as it's closest to Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Fly out of Trivandrum if your trip ends at Kovalam or Varkala.
Can I travel around Kerala by public transport?
You can, but buses and trains don't reach many sights directly, and hill journeys take much longer. A private car with a driver is the easiest way to follow these itineraries, and it is included in all our Kerala packages.
