Malaysia is a year-round destination. It sits just north of the equator, so it is warm and humid in every month, with temperatures in Kuala Lumpur usually between 24 and 33°C. There is no winter or summer in the Indian sense; instead, the seasons are shaped by two monsoons that affect the west and east coasts at different times.

So the best time to visit Malaysia depends on where you are going. This guide explains the weather month by month for Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands, Langkawi, Penang and the east coast islands, and how it fits Indian school holidays and festivals.

Quick answer

  • Kuala Lumpur and Genting: good all year. December to February is usually the most comfortable, with less rain; expect short afternoon showers in any month.
  • Langkawi and Penang: November to April is best, with sunny days and calm seas; December to February is peak season.
  • East coast islands (Perhentian, Redang): about March to October; many resorts close from November to February.
  • For Indian travellers: the Diwali and year-end holidays and summer holidays in May and June are all good times for Kuala Lumpur and Genting.

Kuala Lumpur weather through the year

Kuala Lumpur weather is hot and humid all year, with daytime highs around 31 to 33°C and nights around 23 to 25°C. Rain usually comes as a heavy thunderstorm in the afternoon or evening, often after a sunny morning, and clears within an hour or two.

  • December to February: generally the driest and most pleasant period, though showers still happen.
  • March to April: hot, with an increase in afternoon thunderstorms in the inter-monsoon period.
  • May to September: relatively drier in Kuala Lumpur, but hot; haze from regional forest fires can affect air quality in some years, usually between June and September.
  • October to November: usually the wettest months, with frequent heavy afternoon storms.

Because rain rarely lasts all day, sightseeing works in any month: plan outdoor visits such as Batu Caves for the morning and keep malls, Aquaria KLCC and the Petronas Towers for the afternoon.

Genting Highlands weather

At about 1,800 metres, Genting is much cooler than Kuala Lumpur, usually 15 to 22°C during the day and cooler at night, with frequent mist and drizzle. Carry a light jacket at any time of year. Mornings generally have the clearest views from the cable car. Outdoor rides at SkyWorlds can pause during heavy rain or lightning, so plan for some flexibility. Read our Genting Highlands guide.

Langkawi and Penang seasons

The north-west coast is affected by the southwest monsoon from about May to October, bringing more frequent heavy showers, rougher seas and occasional cancellation of boat trips, with September and October usually the wettest. From November to April, Langkawi and Penang enjoy mostly dry, sunny weather and calm seas, perfect for beaches and island hopping. Prices are highest from December to February and around Chinese New Year. The rainy season is still possible for a short trip, with lower prices and fewer crowds. See our Langkawi guide and Penang guide.

East coast and Borneo

The east coast of the peninsula, including the Perhentian, Redang and Tioman islands, gets the northeast monsoon from about November to February or March, when seas are rough and many island resorts close. The best months are roughly March to October. Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo can be visited all year; drier months vary by region.

Malaysia in May and June

Many Indian families travel during the summer school holidays. Malaysia in May and Malaysia in June is hot and humid, but Kuala Lumpur is relatively drier than in October and November, and Genting's cool weather is a real bonus. It is a good time for Kuala Lumpur, Genting and theme parks such as Sunway Lagoon. Langkawi is in its wetter season, but still enjoyable with flexible plans. Book Genting hotels and theme park tickets early, as Malaysian school holidays can overlap.

Malaysia in December

Malaysia in December is one of the most popular times to visit. Kuala Lumpur is festive, with Christmas decorations and year-end sales in the malls, Langkawi and Penang enter their dry season, and Genting is busy with holidaymakers. This is peak season, so book flights, hotels and SkyWorlds tickets well in advance. The east coast islands are closed for the monsoon.

Festivals worth planning around

  • Thaipusam (January or February): a huge Hindu festival at Batu Caves, with devotees climbing the steps carrying kavadis. Spectacular but extremely crowded.
  • Chinese New Year (January or February): lanterns, lion dances and lights at Kek Lok Si and Petaling Street; some shops close and hotels fill up.
  • Hari Raya Aidilfitri (end of Ramadan, date varies): a major holiday when many locals travel and some businesses close.
  • Deepavali (October or November): Brickfields and Little India in Penang light up with decorations, markets and sweets.
  • Merdeka Day (31 August) and Malaysia Day (16 September): national celebrations and fireworks.

What to pack for each season

  • All year: light cotton clothes, comfortable walking shoes or sandals, sunglasses, a cap, sunscreen and a compact umbrella.
  • For Genting and air-conditioned malls: a light jacket or shawl, as it can feel chilly, especially in the evening.
  • For the wetter months: a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes and a waterproof pouch for your phone on boat trips.
  • For temples and mosques: clothes that cover shoulders and knees, or a scarf and sarong you can carry in a day bag.
  • For Langkawi: swimwear, flip-flops and a dry bag for island hopping.
