Your holiday

A thoughtfully planned holiday experience.

This Manali to Leh to Srinagar road trip is the classic way to experience Ladakh by road, crossing the Himalaya from Himachal Pradesh, exploring Ladakh's valleys and lakes, and leaving through Kargil and the Zojila pass to Kashmir. It is a once-in-a-lifetime journey for people who love long drives and changing landscapes.

From Manali you drive through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul and on to Jispa, then over Baralacha La, the Gata Loops, Lachung La and Tanglang La to Leh. After a day of sightseeing in Leh, you cross Khardung La to Nubra Valley, take the Shyok road to Pangong Lake, and continue on a remote route to Tso Moriri, returning to Leh past Tso Kar.

The final leg heads west past Magnetic Hill, Alchi and the moonland of Lamayuru to Kargil, then through Drass and the Kargil War Memorial to Srinagar. A private car for the whole journey, breakfast and dinner, permits and oxygen support are included.

Refunds, where applicable, are processed after the amount is received back from the hotel or supplier.

Why do Ladakh by road

  • Gradual acclimatisation: climbing slowly from Manali helps your body adjust, although the Jispa to Leh day goes very high.
  • Two great highways: the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh roads in a single trip, without driving the same road twice.
  • Three high-altitude lakes: Pangong, Tso Moriri and Tso Kar.
  • Kargil and Drass: the war memorial and the story of 1999.

Read more about the roads in our how to reach Leh guide and Ladakh mountain passes guide.

Good to know before you book

This trip runs only when both highways are open, usually from about mid-June to late September; opening dates change each year with snow. The Jispa to Leh day is long (about 335 km, 10 to 11 hours) and crosses passes above 5,000 metres. Stays at Jispa and Tso Moriri are simple. We can add transport from Delhi or Chandigarh to Manali and a night in Manali, and a houseboat in Srinagar at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

When are the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh roads open?
Usually the Srinagar–Leh road opens first, in spring, and the Manali–Leh road by early summer; both normally stay open until October or November. Dates vary with snow, so we confirm them for your travel dates.
Can we do the trip in reverse, from Srinagar to Manali?
Yes. Starting from Srinagar is often easier for acclimatisation because the climb is more gradual.
Is Delhi to Manali included?
No, the trip starts in Manali. We can add a Volvo bus, train-and-car or private car from Delhi or Chandigarh.
Is the road trip safe?
Yes, with an experienced local driver and a well-maintained vehicle. Roads can be closed briefly by landslides or snow, so keep a spare day if you can.
Do we need permits?
Yes, for the protected areas. Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle and some other areas need a permit along with environment, wildlife and Red Cross fees. Rules for Indian citizens have been relaxed in recent years and change from time to time, so we arrange the permit or fee receipts for you; carry an original government photo ID.
