Shopping in Dubai

Dubai is a shopper's paradise. Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates have more than a thousand shops between them, along with an aquarium, an ice rink and an indoor ski slope. In old Dubai, the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira are favourites with Indian visitors, and Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai is the place for textiles and electronics.

Gold is a popular buy: prices are set daily and usually compare well with India, though Indian customs limits apply when you bring it home. The Dubai Shopping Festival, usually from mid-December to January, brings big discounts, raffles and fireworks, and Dubai Duty Free at the airport is famous for its range. Dubai by night

Dubai comes alive after sunset. Watch the Dubai Fountain show, take a dhow cruise along the Marina, or walk the waterfront at JBR, Bluewaters and La Mer. Rooftop restaurants, beach clubs and lounges offer spectacular views, and Global Village and the souks stay busy late into the night in the cooler months.

Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars, and only to adults aged 21 and over; drinking in public is not allowed. Families will find plenty to do in the evenings, from light shows to night markets.

Dubai honeymoon packages

For couples, Dubai combines luxury and adventure: a beach resort on Palm Jumeirah or JBR, a sunset at the top of the Burj Khalifa, a candlelit dinner on a dhow cruise, a private desert dinner under the stars, a hot air balloon ride at dawn and a yacht cruise past the Dubai skyline.

Dubai travel tips for Indians

• Money: the currency is the UAE dirham (AED). Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry some cash for souks and taxis.
• Tourism Dirham: hotels charge a tourism fee of about AED 7 to 20 per room per night, depending on the hotel category, paid at the hotel.
• Getting around: the Dubai Metro is fast, cheap and air-conditioned; taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to use. Our packages include airport transfers.
• Dress code: casual clothes are fine in malls and tourist areas, but cover shoulders and knees in mosques and traditional areas, and keep swimwear for the beach and pool.
• Time and power: Dubai is 1.5 hours behind India and uses UK-style three-pin plugs.
• Ramadan: during the holy month, avoid eating or drinking in public during the day; many restaurants still serve tourists discreetly.

Dubai visa for Indians

Indian passport holders need a visa for the UAE. Most travellers apply for a UAE tourist e-visa before travel, valid for a 30-day or 60-day stay, through an airline, an authorised agent or a tour operator. Processing usually takes 3 to 5 working days, and we arrange it as part of your package.

Indians who hold a valid US visa or green card, or a visa or residence permit from the UK or an EU country, can usually get a visa on arrival at UAE airports instead. The same applies to residents of Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand. A passport valid for at least 6 months is required in all cases.

Important notes

• Visa approval is at the discretion of UAE immigration; apply well before travel.
• Hotels collect the Tourism Dirham fee directly and may ask for a refundable deposit at check-in.
• Desert safaris, dhow cruises and outdoor attractions may be changed or cancelled in bad weather or sandstorms.
• Burj Khalifa tickets are for a fixed time slot; sunset slots cost more and sell out early.
• Global Village and the Miracle Garden are seasonal and close in the summer months.
• Prices depend on travel dates, hotel category and availability, and are confirmed at the time of booking.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is about 1.5 hours from Dubai by road.
