Dubai is a big, spread-out city, and where you stay makes a real difference to your holiday: how long you spend in taxis, what is on your doorstep in the evenings, and how much you pay. Each area has a distinct character, from the bustling souks of old Dubai to the beaches of the Marina and the luxury resorts of Palm Jumeirah.

This guide compares the best areas to stay in Dubai for families, couples and budget travellers, with tips on choosing the right hotel.

Bur Dubai and Karama: value and Indian food

Bur Dubai is one of the city's oldest areas, beside Dubai Creek, with Meena Bazaar, the Al Fahidi heritage district, abra boats and dozens of Indian restaurants, including pure vegetarian and Jain-friendly places. Bur Dubai hotels are mostly good-value three and four-star properties near the metro, and the area feels familiar to many Indian travellers.

Best for: budget and mid-range trips, families who want Indian food nearby, and shoppers.

Deira: souks and convenience

Across the Creek, Deira is home to the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and City Centre Deira, and is the closest area to the airport. Deira hotels offer some of the best prices in Dubai, and the Red and Green metro lines run through the district.

Best for: value, shopping, short stays and early flights.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Downtown is home to the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Dubai Fountain and Dubai Opera, with luxury hotels and apartments with tower views. Neighbouring Business Bay offers similar access along the canal, often at lower prices.

Best for: first-time visitors who want to be in the heart of modern Dubai, couples and shoppers.

Dubai Marina and JBR: beach and nightlife

Dubai Marina is a canal lined with skyscrapers, restaurants and yachts, and the adjoining Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) has a lively beachfront promenade. Dubai Marina hotels include many beach and high-rise options, close to Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai.

Best for: couples, honeymooners, friends and families who want the beach. It is about 30 to 40 minutes from Downtown and old Dubai.

Palm Jumeirah: luxury resorts

Palm Jumeirah has some of Dubai's most spectacular resorts, including Atlantis The Palm, with private beaches, water parks and fine dining. It is ideal for a resort-style holiday or honeymoon, but further from the city's older areas. See our Palm Jumeirah guide.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim: beaches and the Burj Al Arab

The coastal neighbourhoods of Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim offer public beaches such as Kite Beach and La Mer, the Burj Al Arab, Madinat Jumeirah and Wild Wadi, with a mix of luxury resorts and boutique hotels. Dubai beach hotels here are excellent for families who want the sea without the high-rise feel of the Marina.

Al Barsha: central and good value

Around Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha has many mid-range hotels between Downtown and the Marina, with easy metro access and Ski Dubai next door.

Hotel apartments for families

For larger families or longer stays, hotel apartments in Bur Dubai, Al Barsha, Downtown and the Marina offer separate bedrooms, a living area and a kitchen, often at a lower price per person than two hotel rooms. They are especially useful for families who want to prepare simple meals or need space for children and grandparents.
