Snow on Red Square, frozen canals in St Petersburg and the Northern Lights over Murmansk: Russia in winter is a completely different trip from summer, and many Indian travellers prefer it. Here is what to expect from November to March.
Winter weather by city
| City | December–February | Daylight in December |
|---|---|---|
| Moscow | About −10°C to −2°C, regular snow | About 7 hours |
| St Petersburg | About −8°C to 0°C, damp and windy | About 6 hours |
| Murmansk | About −15°C to −5°C | Polar night (no sunrise) in December |
Moscow in winter and December
Moscow in December is festive: GUM and the streets around Red Square are lit up, ice rinks open in the parks and the New Year markets begin. The Kremlin, the Metro and the museums are warm indoors, so sightseeing continues comfortably. New Year's Eve is the biggest celebration of the year, and hotels fill early.
St Petersburg in winter
St Petersburg in winter is quieter, with shorter queues at the Hermitage and snowy views of the palaces and canals. Peterhof's fountains are off, so many travellers swap that day for the Catherine Palace and its Amber Room. A ballet evening at the Mariinsky is a perfect winter plan.
The Arctic: Northern Lights in Murmansk
Winter is the season for the aurora. From late September to March, a short flight takes you to Murmansk for Northern Lights hunts, reindeer and huskies, and the Barents Sea at Teriberka.
