The Gili Islands are known for clear waters, relaxed island life, beach cafes and a slower pace compared to mainland Bali. There are no regular cars on the island, which gives Gili its peaceful charm.

Where you stay: Kuta, Gili & Nusa Dua

Kuta puts you close to the airport and in the middle of the action: a wide sunset beach, malls, markets, water parks and plenty of Indian restaurants, which makes it an easy first base after the flight from India. (2 nights)

The Gili Islands, reached by fast boat from Bali, are car-free coral islands where you get around by bicycle or cidomo, snorkel with sea turtles and watch the sunset over Mount Agung. (1 night)

Nusa Dua is the quietest and most manicured of the beach areas: gated five-star resorts, a calm lagoon beach that suits children and older travellers, and water sports at nearby Tanjung Benoa. (2 nights)
