Where you stay: Nusa Dua, Gili & Ubud

Nusa Dua is the quietest and most manicured of the beach areas: gated five-star resorts, a calm lagoon beach that suits children and older travellers, and water sports at nearby Tanjung Benoa. (4 nights)

The Gili Islands, reached by fast boat from Bali, are car-free coral islands where you get around by bicycle or cidomo, snorkel with sea turtles and watch the sunset over Mount Agung. (2 nights)

Ubud is where most visitors fall in love with Bali: emerald rice fields, craft villages, the Sacred Monkey Forest, Balinese dance in the evenings and peaceful hotels in the countryside. (2 nights)

Read our guide to where to stay in Bali to compare the areas.
